Faith Kipyegon has set another World Record in a span of less than two months after she won the Mile race at the Monaco Diamond League on July 21, 2023.

Kipyegon obliterated the field, clocking 4.07.64 to lower Sifan Hassan’s record of 4.12.33 that she set in 2019.

This is the third world record that Kipyegon has broken after setting new records for the 1500m and 5000m at the Florence and Paris Diamond Leagues in June.

So dominant was Kipyegon’s latest win that Ciara Mageean finished in second place almost seven seconds after the 29 year old, mother of one was done.

Ethiopia’s Hailu Freweyni completed the podium places.

The Mile Race is not a core event in the World Athletics Championships or Olympics Calendar but is often competed in select Diamond League events.

A mile is approximately 1610 metres which is 110 metres more than Kipyegon’s speciality, the 1500 metres.

Prior to this race at the Principality, Kipyegon’s personal best was a time of 4.16.71 and she ended up shaving a clean nine seconds en route to setting the new world record.

The double world and Olympic champion is now a triple world record holder ahead of next month’s World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

On June 12 at State House Nairobi, during the State Reception for Faith Kipyegon and Ferdinand Omanyala, it was revealed that a new world record holder will receive Sh5million in a new plan escalate to Kenya’s profile as a top sporting country.

President William Ruto said such achievers will also be facilitated with diplomatic passports and conferred other national honours and privileges.

He added that the government is refining necessary policies and facilities to harness the country’s potential in sports.

“Our sportsmen and women are heroes who have promoted Kenya’s iconic brand globally. We want to acknowledge their invaluable contribution by honouring and rewarding them accordingly,” said the President.
