The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a police officer accused of demanding Sh10,000 bribe.
Mr George Waweru Kagia of Mutuati Police Station in Igembe North, Meru County, allegedly demanded the money so that he could release a motorcycle he had confiscated from a boda boda operator.
The arrest was confirmed by EACC Head of Corporate Communication Eric Ngumbi.
EACC detectives arrested the officer Thursday, following investigations into the complaint received on June 7, 2023.
According to the complainant, he was riding from Mutuati market when police officers stopped him at the Kongoitime area. The officers demanded that he proofs ownership of the motor bike. The rider did not have the documents at the time since he does not carry them everywhere he goes, he said.
The officers then confiscated the motorcycle and told him present the documents to Kamweline Police Station.
The complainant alleges that on the same day, he presented a sale agreement to Mr Waweru but the officer said the agreement was fake and demanded a bribe of Sh 10,000 to release the motorcycle.
The complainant said that being unable to raise the money he reported the incident to EACC for intervention.
EACC took up the matter leading to the arrest of the officer.
The EACC detectives took the suspect to Ruiri Police Station where they processed him. He was released on cash bail of Sh20,000 pending completion investigations.

In an interview, Ngumbi said that the commission will tighten the fight against the vice, warning the perpetrators and accomplices.

“Corruption is not one way traffic, many stakeholders are involved and we will not tolerate this. Many cases that we are investigating are also involving professionals in various fields. We will weed them out despite the positions in society”, said Ngumbi.
