Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has encouraged residents of Meru to register with the Social Health Authority (SHA) as part of the government’s commitment to achieving universal healthcare across the country.
Speaking during an inspection tour of Kamachege Market in South Imenti, Prof. Kindiki emphasized that access to quality and affordable healthcare is a constitutional right and the SHA is a key pillar in realizing that goal.
“SHA will ensure that no Kenyan is left behind when it comes to healthcare. I urge all residents of Meru to register and take full advantage of this opportunity to secure their health and that of their families,” said the Deputy President.
He noted that the SHA, which replaced the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), is structured to provide more inclusive, transparent, and responsive health coverage.
With streamlined operations and a focus on equity, the initiative aims to remove financial barriers to accessing essential medical services.
Prof. Kindiki also appealed to community leaders, health workers, and local administrators to mobilize residents, especially those in rural and underserved areas, to register for SHA.
In a firm response to critics of the SHA program, the Deputy President cautioned residents against being misled by political rhetoric.
“Do not listen to the politicians making noise against SHA. Most of them have alternative and expensive medical insurance schemes. It is the ordinary citizen who stands to gain the most from this program,” he said.
The DP further clarified that the monthly contributions to the SHA would be based on one’s ability to pay, stressing that the initiative is not designed for the wealthy alone, but for every Kenyan regardless of income level.
He went on to explain that individuals earning higher incomes would have small deductions from their salaries to help support low-income earners, ensuring a fair and compassionate health system.
“Health is not a luxury; it is a necessity. A healthy population is the backbone of our development. Let us all join hands to ensure every citizen is covered,” he added.
