The Defenders Coalition and End Femicide Movement has held its 6th annual women human rights defenders forum in Nairobi.

The three day forum dubbed “Ni Mama Forum End Femicide KE” under the theme “Accelerate Action” with 115 Women Human Rights advocates seeks to reflect on progress and challenges in protecting women’s and girls’ rights in Kenya.

“The death of every woman means a loss to our nation, communities and families. With a significant rise in the number of femicide cases in the last year, it is clear that we must act swiftly and decisively with great determination to address this issue and bring to an end the deaths of our girls and women ” said Daniel Kamau, the Defenders Coalition Executive director.

He noted that this year’s theme is very timely, as femicide and cases of gender-based violence have reached crisis levels in the nation.

Gloria Madegwa, the head of programmes and strategic partnerships said there were 171 women in the movement in 2024.

She urged the attendees to join hands not only condemn the barbaric acts but to also fight for women rights.

In the recent years, Defenders Coalition has been in the forefront to advocate for the protection of human rights defenders and strengthening their capacities to work more effectively.

Since its establishment in 2007, it has also been advocating for favourable legal, policy and institutional environments in order to reduce their vulnerability to the risk of persecution or harm.
